A tweaking application distributed under the name of Auslogics BoostSpeed that should serve the purpose of precise configuration and optimization of the operating system. When run on a computer with newly installed Windows 7 (x86), the application detects 189 “problems”, among which are the following ones:

  • Presence of temporary files (these files are created by the operating system during its work)
  • Presence of “empty” system registry branches (do not affect operating system performance)
  • Presence of undeleted system log files

In other words, all “problems” detected by the application are not critical and do not have any influence on Windows performance, running speed, or system stability.

The application allows to eliminate only few of all the detected “problems”. To be able to fix all the “issues”, the user must purchase the full version of the program.

Driver Updater and PCSpeedUp fall into the same category of unwanted programs as Auslogics BoostSpeed. However, these two applications do not fix any errors for free urging the user to purchase their full versions from the start.

One should mention that suchlike tweaking applications “optimize” system registry with no regard to the state of the specific operating system and its characteristics. Due to this fact, some changes introduced by these programs can cause different bugs, for example, the following ones:

  • Changes in cash size of system files used by the SFC utility can prevent recovery of these files in case they get damaged.
  • Terminating some idle system services can make it impossible to connect and configure external equipment or can cause failures in network operation.
  • Shutting down the subsystem of gathering information on errors and deleting system log files can lead to difficulties in diagnostics of operating system errors.
  • Minimizing response time of system services can prevent these services from starting on a computer with poor hardware configuration.
  • There have been some cases, when during the “optimization” process, some applications processed system registry branches and keys incorrectly, which resulted in system failures.
  • Removing some utilities from the Windows autorun list can lead to problems in functioning of equipment or to operation errors of some applications.

In other words, in the majority of cases, it is not recommended to use suchlike programs. Moreover, it should be noted that only experienced users who have extensive knowledge about Windows operation and architecture can employ these applications for configuration of operating system parameters.

Curing recommendations

  1. If the operating system (OS) can be loaded (either normally or in safe mode), download Dr.Web Security Space and run a full scan of your computer and removable media you use. More about Dr.Web Security Space.
  2. If you cannot boot the OS, change the BIOS settings to boot your system from a CD or USB drive. Download the image of the emergency system repair disk Dr.Web® LiveDisk , mount it on a USB drive or burn it to a CD/DVD. After booting up with this media, run a full scan and cure all the detected threats.

  1. If the mobile device is operating normally, download and install Dr.Web for Android. Run a full system scan and follow recommendations to neutralize the detected threats.
  2. If the mobile device has been locked by Android.Locker ransomware (the message on the screen tells you that you have broken some law or demands a set ransom amount; or you will see some other announcement that prevents you from using the handheld normally), do the following:
    • Load your smartphone or tablet in the safe mode (depending on the operating system version and specifications of the particular mobile device involved, this procedure can be performed in various ways; seek clarification from the user guide that was shipped with the device, or contact its manufacturer);
    • Once you have activated safe mode, install the Dr.Web for Android onto the infected handheld and run a full scan of the system; follow the steps recommended for neutralizing the threats that have been detected;
    • Switch off your device and turn it on as normal.
